Recalling Texas Modern: An Oral History of Modern Art Made in Texas

In 2007, CASETA helped to support “Recalling Texas Modern: An Oral History of Modern Art Made in Texas,” an oral history project created by Baylor University Faculty Research Fellow Katie Robinson Edwards. The project involves interviewing artists who were creating modern art in Texas from the 1940s to the mid-1960s, coinciding with the period of abstraction’s rise in the United States to the advent of Pop Art. Recalling Texas Modern seeks the interviewees’ perspectives on 1.) artistic influences on their work, 2.) support for modern art in Texas, 3.) support of their fellow artists and community, and 4.) the challenges/advantages of making abstract art in Texas during this period. The project is specifically for interviews with surviving artists (i.e., no second-generation artists or family members).
