About the CASETA Awards:

CASETA annually gives awards to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement and study of early Texas art.  The awards and the criteria used making the awards are as follows:

Lifetime Achievement Award - to be presented to an individual (or group of individuals) who has distinguished himself, herself or themselves with a lifetime involvement with Texas art as an artist, a patron, collector or scholar of early Texas art.

Criteria: Must be an artist, patron collector, scholar or group that has had a lifetime of involvement with early Texas art.  Must be retired or near the end of their career.

Distinguished Service Award Within the Organization - to be presented to an individual who has given long-time and distinguished service to CASETA and the promotion of early Texas art through activities such as board service, fundraising, committee work, educational work or the like.

Criteria: Must have given long-time and distinguished service to CASETA and the promotion of early Texas art.  Activities may include board service, committee work, educational work, fundraising or other activities that have promoted CASETA and the preservation, study and appreciation of early Texas art.

Distinguished Service Award Outside the Organization - to be presented to an individual who has given long-time and distinguished service in promoting CASETA and the advancement and study of early Texas art through activities in ways other than active participation in the organization.

Criteria: Must have demonstrated over a long period of time involvement in activities that have promoted CASETA and the preservation, study and appreciation of early Texas art.  Activities may include a variety of things such as collecting, writing, speaking about CASETA and the preservation, study and appreciation of early Texas art.

Publication Award - to be presented to an individual or individuals who have made the most important contribution to the published literature on early Texas art during the previous calendar year.  The publication may be in the form of a journal article, an exhibition catalogue, a monograph, or a book.  This award also carries a monetary award.

Criteria: Must be a publication about the preservation, study or appreciation of early Texas art that was published in the calendar prior to the award.  Must be a published work by a recognized press or organization; no self-published materials will be considered.  Must demonstrate a high quality writing that is engaging and accurate.

Exhibition Award - to be presented to an institution that has organized and presented the most outstanding exhibition on early Texas art during the previous calendar year.

Criteria: Must be an exhibition of work by early Texas artists that was opened to the public in the calendar year immediately preceding the award.  Must be in a recognized, not-for-profit venue such as a museum or art center.  Exhibitions in commercial venues will not be considered.

Research Award - to be presented to an individual or individuals who have completed the most outstanding and original research project related to early Texas art during the previous calendar year.  This award will also carry a monetary award.

Criteria: Research project must be original research that is completed during the calendar year immediately preceding the award.  The completed project might be any one of several forms, i.e., a formal written, unpublished paper; an electronically based project, transcribed oral histories, or the like.  Group projects will be considered.

Process for Making Nominations

All nominations must be made in writing (electronic nominations are acceptable) and should indicate what it is about the person, the event or the publication that in their opinion warrants consideration for a CASETA Award.

 

All written nominations must be received by the Chair of the CASETA Awards Committee by January 1st.

 

All nominations for individuals must be accompanied by an electronic copy of the individual's CV or Bio statement.

 

All nominations for exhibitions must be accompanies by any catalogues or other material produced in relation to the exhibition.  The material will be returned if a pre-addressed postage paid envelope is included.

 

All nominations for publications must be accompanied by three copies of the publication.  The material will be returned if a pre-addressed postage paid envelope is included.

 

All nominations for the research award must be accompanied by three copies of the research project; electronic submissions are acceptable.  The material submitted will be returned if a pre-addressed postage paid envelope is included.

Selection Process:

Prior to January 1, the Chair of the CASETA Board will appoint a three member Selection Committee, chaired by a member of the CASETA Awards Committee, to review all materials and prepare recommendations to the CASETA Board.

 

The Board will review the recommendations of the Selection Committee in advance of its February meeting and make the final selections at that meeting.
